Through consistent data checks, schools can identify when changes are needed and assess progress after the change is implemented.

Big 5 Data

One way to help systemize your data is using the Big 5. This is a set of 5 categories that identify the important information that should be collected and reviewed regarding student behavior. Each of these categories will help provide a picture of how behavior is going in your school and if your current solutions are working.

The Big 5 Data includes:

Who: Demographic Data on Who’s Getting Referrals

Start with data on which students are receiving referrals. This can include the following but is not limited to:

What: Referral Data Category

Identify how often each type of referral is occurring. Here are some common categories that you can add to, if needed.

When: Times that Referrals are Happening

By graphing the times when a referral takes place, it will be easier to see any patterns in disruptive behavior. For example, if there is a cluster around lunch time, you can change some student lunches to alleviate the conflict.

Where: Location of Referral Incidents

Similarly to the “When” category, viewing patterns around location will help with identifying if staff is needed in a specific area more often.

How often: How Many Students Fall into Each of Your 3 Tiers

The goal in PBIS is to have at least 80% of your student population in tier 1. How is your school doing against that goal?

Also, it’s good to include your ISS and OSS numbers as well as data from any other consequences your school uses for a full picture.
